Marble Children & Family Figurines

Mother and Child, Cherubs, and Family Groups in Stone

Some sculpture is admired and some is felt. Family group pieces — a mother with her children, two siblings on a bench, cherubs mid-play — belong firmly to the second kind. They are the figurines people choose for a nursery, an anniversary, or a home they have just moved into together.

These are also the most technically demanding pieces in the collection. Multi-figure groups mean overlapping limbs, linked hands, and undercut spaces that have to be carved out of a single block without weakening it. Shilakrut’s artisans work these in Makrana white and terracotta-toned marbles, carrying a workshop legacy that began in 1971.

Why a Family Group The Meaning Behind a Family Figurine

A mother-and-child figure is one of the few sculptural subjects that appears in nearly every culture that has ever carved stone. It needs no context and no caption — which is exactly why it works as a gift, and why it stays meaningful long after the occasion that prompted it.

Family groups also carry something practical: they mark a moment. A piece bought when a child is born, or when a couple sets up a home, becomes the object that dates the memory. Marble simply guarantees the object outlasts the memory of buying it.

Placement Guide Display & Positioning Guide

Multi-figure groups are carved in the round, so they need a position that allows viewing from more than one side — a centre table, an open console, or a low plinth works better than a shelf pushed against a wall. Place them lower than you would a formal bust; these pieces read best when viewed slightly from above, the way you would look at children.

Warm lighting suits these more than cool white light, particularly for terracotta-toned pieces. If the figurine sits in a home with small children or pets, a slightly recessed position or a low plinth with a wide base is worth the small extra cost — these groups have projecting limbs that take the impact in a fall.

To an extent. The number of figures and their arrangement can often be adapted, and a fully bespoke group can be commissioned from a photograph. Share what you have in mind and our team will advise on what the stone allows.

Mainly premium Makrana white marble, with some designs available in warm terracotta-toned stone. The stone choice is noted per design and alternatives can be discussed.

They are carved from a single marble block wherever the design allows, which is what gives the piece its strength and its continuity of grain. Very large or highly projecting compositions may use joined sections, and this is always disclosed before you order.

They are solid marble and heavy for their size, so they are stable — but projecting arms and limbs can chip if knocked. A recessed shelf or a wide-based plinth is a sensible precaution in a home with toddlers.

Most range from tabletop scale of around a foot up to larger display pieces of two to three feet. Larger commissions are possible — tell us your intended placement and we will suggest a size.

Yes. Pieces can be prepared for gifting, and for bulk or corporate gifting orders we can arrange presentation packing. Mention this when you enquire.

Yes — a name, a date, or a short dedication can be carved into the base or added on a small plaque, which is a common request for anniversary and baby gifts.

A soft dry brush works better than a cloth for detailed groups, since it reaches into the recesses without snagging. Avoid acidic cleaners entirely, and keep water use to a minimum.

Existing designs in standard sizes usually ship within a couple of weeks. Custom sizes, inscriptions, or bespoke family groups take longer, with a timeline confirmed once your requirement is final.
